Chinook Therapeutics is a clinical-stage biotechnology company developing precision medicines for kidney diseases. Chinook’s product candidates are being investigated in rare, severe chronic kidney disorders with opportunities for well-defined clinical pathways. Chinook’s lead program is atrasentan, a phase 3 endothelin receptor antagonist for the treatment of IgA nephropathy and other proteinuric glomerular diseases. BION-1301, an anti-APRIL monoclonal antibody is being evaluated in a phase 1b trial for IgA nephropathy. In addition, Chinook is advancing CHK-336, an oral small molecule LDHA inhibitor for the treatment of primary hyperoxaluria, as well as research programs for other rare, severe chronic kidney diseases.


Chinook is building its pipeline by leveraging insights in kidney single cell RNA sequencing, human-derived organoids, and new translational models, to discover and develop therapeutics with differentiating mechanisms of action against key kidney disease pathways. Chinook Therapeutics is seeking an energetic and collaborative Research Associate or Sr. Research Associate to join the Exploratory Biology team at our laboratories situated in Vancouver, Canada. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing, performing and analyzing in vitro experiments, and contributing to go/no-go decisions in preclinical drug discovery programs. Hands-on experience in cellular biology, molecular biology, immunology are required, with nephrology base knowledge preferred. The ideal candidate will possess strong teamwork and communication skills, will be able to design and perform experiments independently, and will propose innovative solutions to biological questions. The successful candidate will work within a multidisciplinary drug discovery team of medicinal chemists, DMPK scientists, and in vivo pharmacologists.


Responsibilities Include:

  • Design, perform, and analyze in vitro experiments to support the advancement of multiple preclinical drug discovery programs
  • Develop and perform biochemical and cell-based assays to validate/identify drug targets, of novel compounds
  • Establish and execute assays to analyze PD markers in collaboration with a multidisciplinary research team
  • Perform cell culture assays for cellular phenotyping and functional assays
  • Proactively interrogate research literature and contribute to overall project strategy
  • Participate in and present data in team meetings
  • Train and mentor co-op students in daily lab activities
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of a positive team-focused company culture


Education, Experience and Skills:

  • B.Sc. or M.Sc. degree with at least 2 years of post-graduate research experience, preferably in an industrial drug discovery setting. Title will be dependent on education and experience.
  • Hands-on experience establishing cell culture platforms and/or cell-based functional assays
  • Hands-on experience in key biological techniques (e.g. qPCR, ELISA, flow cytometry, Western blotting, and/or immunohistochemistry)
  • Strong working knowledge of cellular biology, molecular biology, and immunology (innate immunity and B and T cell biology, PBMC isolation, B and T cell isolation)
  • Experience with human immune-culture, flow cytometry, cell sorting and immunomodulation assays with B and T cells, MACS and immune co-culture
  • Knowledge in renal cell biology techniques and understanding of the mechanisms underlying kidney disease are strongly preferred
  • Hands-on experience with glomerular cell culture methodologies (e.g. podocyte systems, endothelial cells, and/or mesangial cells) is preferred
  • Hands-on experience with kidney organoid or ex-vivo 3D systems would be an asset
  • Demonstrated history of learning and establishing new laboratory techniques independently
  • Effective time management skills and ability to work in a fast-paced team environment, meet deadlines, and prioritize work
  • Ability to analyze, interpret, and communicate data in a clear manner
  • A strong team player with a passion for science and drug discovery
  • Scientific curiosity, positive attitude and high personal and ethical standards
