Chinook Therapeutics is a biotechnology company developing precision medicines for patients with kidney diseases.  We apply our proprietary research platform to discover and develop therapeutics with novel mechanisms of action against key kidney disease pathways. The development focus is on rare, serious disorders with clear unmet medical needs and defined and rapid clinical development opportunities.  Chinook recently in-licensed a late-stage product, atrasentan, and plans to initiate a phase 3 trial for chronic kidney disease during 2020.  Our pipeline has several other internal programs at the validation and lead optimization stages, the first of which is rapidly progressing to enter clinical trials by 2021.  We are also evaluating business development opportunities for early and late-stage clinical assets to enhance the pipeline.

 

Chinook has raised a $65 million Series A financing from top tier venture capital firms Versant Ventures, Apple Tree Partners, and Samsara BioCapital.  We are a growing team of approximately 30 employees and are based in Vancouver, British Columbia and Seattle, Washington.

 

Position:

Chinook has a new opportunity for a Head of Human Resources, responsible for leading all aspects of the human resources function at Chinook.  This is a hands-on position that is responsible to ensure HR programs and strategy support the achievement of Chinook’s long- and short-term strategic goals.  The Head of Human Resources will report to the CEO and will be based in Seattle with some travel to our Vancouver office. This person will play a key role in the development of the HR infrastructure and will help shape the cultural trajectory of our growing company.

 

Responsibilities include:

  • Lead the HR function in all areas including strategic recruitment and on-boarding, compensation and benefits, learning & development, performance management, compliance, employee relations, and organizational development. 
  • Build the HR infrastructure needed to support the company’s growth and business strategies through the creation and implementation of HR policies, processes, and systems. 
  • Promote the intentional development and maintenance of a positive team-focused company culture at Chinook. 
  • Provide HR support to all Chinook employees and leaders, demonstrating a high degree of ownership and customer focus.
  • Benchmark and develop industry-specific, progressive compensation and benefits programs. 
  • Manage the HR budget and work closely with the leadership team to establish and implement staffing plans that support company objectives and strategy.
  • Oversee and interact with external counsel and/or third-party service providers with respect to employment and HR matters. 

 

Education, Experience, and Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, human resources or other related discipline and at least 8 years’ relevant experience; Master’s degree and/or HR certification preferred. 
  • Must have pharmaceutical and/or biotechnology industry experience; global HR management experience a plus. 
  • Hands-on leader with track record of establishing and supporting strategic, scalable HR programs and operations that support corporate objectives and strategy. 
  • Strong business acumen and strategic planning skills
  • Extensive HR generalist knowledge and skills, with a broad understanding of the technical and functional components of HR, including: compensation, benefits,  organizational and leadership development, talent management, recruiting, immigration/international assignments, HR systems, employee relations, training and development. 
  • Demonstrates a bias for action and an ability to deal effectively with significant ambiguity.
  • Excellent communication, presentation and influencing skills.
  • Demonstrated success in supporting rapid growth and shaping an organization’s culture.
