Chinook Therapeutics is a clinical-stage biotechnology company developing precision medicines for kidney diseases. Chinook’s product candidates are being investigated in rare, severe chronic kidney disorders with opportunities for well-defined clinical pathways. Chinook’s lead program is atrasentan, a phase 3 endothelin receptor antagonist for the treatment of IgA nephropathy and other proteinuric glomerular diseases. BION-1301, an anti-APRIL monoclonal antibody is being evaluated in a phase 1/2 trial for IgA nephropathy. In addition, Chinook is advancing CHK-336, an oral small molecule LDHA inhibitor for the treatment of primary hyperoxaluria, as well as research programs for other rare, severe chronic kidney diseases.

 

Chinook is building its pipeline by leveraging insights in kidney single cell RNA sequencing, human-derived organoids, and new translational models, to discover and develop therapeutics with differentiating mechanisms of action against key kidney disease pathways. Chinook trades on Nasdaq under the ticker symbol KDNY and has locations in Vancouver, BC, Seattle, WA and Oakland, CA.


The Head of Strategic Sourcing & Procurement will report to the Vice President, Finance and Accounting but will also work very closely with our CFO and other executives at Chinook


Position:


Over the next 18 months we expect to go from four clinical trials today to 13 for three product candidates and to begin building a commercial infrastructure to prepare for the possible launch of Atrasentan in the U.S.  To assist with this growth and the many vendor negotiations involved, we are seeking a head of Procurement. The ideal candidate must have experience leading the procurement function at a biotech/biopharma company and thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. The successful candidate must be able to take a leadership role in developing great processes, assist in negotiations cross functionally and, over time, hire and lead a great procurement team. This role requires an individual that can be effective at being hands-on in the short-term while developing a strategic path forward that will deliver world-class purchasing processes and service.

Responsibilities include:

 

  • Partner with Commercial, R&D, and other Departments to develop and implement procurement strategies for a wide variety of products and services.
  • Establish a procurement culture resulting in supplier relationships and contracts that improve quality, competitive pricing, and service.
  • Develop procurement processes and deploy new systems as needed in partnership with finance department.
  • Proactively reduce risks of supply disruptions.
  • Lead resolution of supplier quality issues in partnership with the functional leads and QA.
  • Support all procurement activities per requests by internal business partner functions.
  • Building of procurement function.
  • Vendor Management (Quality, Cost, Delivery, Security of Supply, and Service) 


Education, Experience and Skills:

 

  • Lead efforts to reduce risks within the supply base.
  • Identify and deliver on cost savings opportunities.
  • Contracts management (Strategy Development, Negotiation & Compliance Management).
  • Negotiate optimal terms with suppliers (price, delivery, and payment terms).
  • Demand the best overall value.
  • Clearly communicate requirements to suppliers, both verbally and in writing.
  • Deliver a high level of customer service within the company.
  • Lead preparation and execution of supplier business reviews.
  • Establish procurement policies & procedures and ensure compliance with such.
    • Ability to create a procurement function and hire and lead an excellent team.
    • Ability to work cross-functionally and gain the trust of numerous internal stakeholders.
    • Able to set high expectations and actively manage vendors to deliver to a high-performance level. High level of attention to detail and continuous vendor feedback.
    • Able to develop a strategy with stakeholders, plan the negotiation and negotiate in a demanding yet professional manner.
    • Ability to quickly analyze problems, investigate and determine solutions.
    • Able to define goals and plans, then manage a project to successful completion.
    • Able to manage a wide variety of tasks, maintain and communicate task status to stakeholders. Proactive follow-up to ensure on-time completion of deliverables.
    • Able to present detailed analyses and proposals to all levels of management. Proficient with Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
    • Bachelor’s degree strongly preferred.
    • Experience managing manufacturing, clinical development, research, and commercial relationships encountered in the life sciences or biotech industries.
    • 10+ years of procurement experience in a research and clinical development environment in which the expected skill set above was used extensively.
