Chinook Therapeutics is a biotechnology company developing precision medicines for patients with kidney diseases.  We apply our proprietary research platform to discover and develop therapeutics with novel mechanisms of action against key kidney disease pathways. The development focus is on rare, serious disorders with clear unmet medical needs and defined and rapid clinical development opportunities.  Chinook’s pipeline currently has several internal programs at the validation and lead optimization stages rapidly progressing for multiple programs to enter clinical trials by 2021.  We are also evaluating business development opportunities for early and late-stage clinical assets to enhance the pipeline.

Chinook has raised a $65 million Series A financing from top tier venture capital firms Versant Ventures, Apple Tree Partners, and Samsara BioCapital.  We are a growing team of approximately 25 employees and are based in Vancouver, British Columbia and Seattle, Washington.

Position:

The Translational Renal Biologist will contribute to the scientific and strategic leadership of Chinook’s drug discovery efforts to deliver precision medicines for kidney disease patients. They will bring deep expertise in renal cell biology and a strong understanding of the pathogenesis and mechanisms of kidney diseases. This role has responsibility for expanding the renal cell biology capabilities within Chinook, including the development of translational in vitro model systems for target validation and incorporation into drug discovery screening funnels. In addition, the successful candidate will make key contributions to the strategic direction of renal research including identification of new kidney disease indications to investigate and selection of new therapeutic targets. This will involve extensive collaboration with external kidney disease area scientific leaders and a lead role in providing scientific assessment of business development opportunities. The position will be based in Vancouver, BC, and report to the Head of Renal Discovery and Translational Medicine. The positions title will be dependent on the successful candidate’s background and relevant kidney disease experience.

 Responsibilities include:

  • In collaboration with senior leadership, make key contributions to the overall Chinook scientific strategy to create precision medicines for kidney disease
  • Identify future areas of kidney disease research aligned with Chinook’s precision medicine vision
  • Lead team efforts focused on target selection and target validation and support programs as they advance through lead optimization
  • Build a kidney disease cell biology platform and lead this scientific team directing their activities across the drug discovery pipeline
  • To identify transformational discoveries in external kidney disease research and to establish and lead collaborations with scientific experts in the nephrology community
  • Make key contributions to the identification and scientific assessment of business development opportunities to further build Chinook’s pipeline
  • Provide a resource of deep scientific expertise in renal biology and disease, and maintain high visibility among internal and external peers
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of a positive team-focused company culture

Education, Experience, and Skills:

  • Ph.D. or equivalent in renal physiology, pharmacology, cell biology or related field with at least 5 years of post-graduate experience in kidney disease research that includes experience in biotech or pharma
  • Deep scientific and technical expertise in renal cell biology and in vitro kidney model systems along with a strong understanding of mechanisms of kidney diseases
  • Successful track record of publication in high-impact, peer-reviewed kidney journals and presentations at national and international kidney disease research meetings
  • Experience in communicating and collaborating with global scientific leaders in kidney disease research
  • Experienced providing scientific assessment of business development opportunities as a member of due diligence teams.
  • Experience supervising direct reports and collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams in a drug discovery environment
  • Positive attitude and high personal and ethical standards in achieving corporate goals
